What the fork?
Welcome to Forkable, a weekly newsletter covering the world of open source, curated by London-based technology journalist and ex-TechCrunch writer Paul Sawers.
A bit about me: I’ve evolved from writing about consumer tech at The Next Web, through a hybrid consumer and enterprise beat at VentureBeat, and onto TechCrunch where I was Senior Writer focused on European technology startups with a distinctly enterprise flavour.
You can see my Techmeme headlines spanning 14 years here.
I have increasingly found myself reading, discussing, thinking, and writing about the myriad moving parts that make up the software ecosystem, and open source is never far from the conversation. The fervent open source community — in its myriad flavours — has always been a fascinating microcosm of collaboration and conflict, replete with passionate individuals and competing visions. So I figured why not keep a record of all the goings-on in a newsletter?
Forkable goes out each Friday, serving a summary of all the big topics and talking points — this might be new product launches; startup funding rounds; licensing shenanigans; and all the rest. While software is the core focus, Forkable will include other notable tidbits where “open” is a central facet of the story — that means AI and hardware will be firmly on the agenda too.
Additionally, as part of my COSS Corner segment, I sometimes profile startups and key figures from the commercial open source software (COSS) space.
This newsletter is a personal project, one that will evolve over time as I figure out what works, and what doesn’t.
